What Clients Look for in the First 2 Lines of an Upwork Proposal
Win attention in the first two lines of your Upwork proposal with hooks that prove you read the job.
Clients decide fast
Many clients decide whether to keep reading in seconds. Your first two lines must earn line three.
Patterns that work
- Restate the outcome they want
- Call out a constraint (deadline, stack, budget type)
- Point to a similar problem you’ve solved
Patterns that fail
- “Dear Sir/Madam”
- “I am writing to express interest”
- “I have carefully read your job posting” (then nothing specific)
Rewrite drill
Take a weak opener and force this template:
“You’re looking for [outcome] with [constraint]. I’ve done [similar proof].”
Do this for five old proposals — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
