How to avoid generic proposals

A short checklist after you generate: first-line test, instruction check, one proof item, no off-platform contact.

Generated drafts often sound polite and empty. Before you copy to Upwork:

  • First two lines — could they open a different job? If yes, rewrite.
  • Instructions — word to include, rate, screening answers. Check the original post.
  • Proof — one project you will defend. Delete the skill laundry list.
  • Questions — two that change scope. Delete “let me know if you have questions.”
  • Contact — no phone, WhatsApp, or personal email.

The generator is a starting point. Generic output is a reason to edit, not a reason to send faster. See [proposal mistakes](/guides/upwork-proposal-mistakes).
